This temple may be the most famous among all old temples in Ayutthaya Historical City by its mystical stone Buddha head inside the roots of a banyan tree. Situated to the east of the Royal Palace in the park, Wat Mahathat has been, built, restored then collapsed several times in the past before the present remains. There are also many other ruins around the temple that well worth a visit.
Wat Chaiwatthanaram is located in the west of the park near the Chao Phraya River. The architecture here is extremely majestic which is a great opportunity for picture taking. Wat Phra Si Sanphet is a part of the Old Ayutthaya Royal Palace’s remains, which is right in the heart of Ayutthaya Historical Park. It was the royal temple of the Kingdom where is used for such important royal ceremonies. The main part of the temple is three big main stupas containing the ashes of three kings of Ayutthaya. The magnificent architecture of Wat Phra Si Sanphet is usually imaged or adorn on many postcards or travel books sold in Ayutthaya.
The temple is one of the oldest temples in Thailand, which is built even before the Ayutthaya Kingdom came into existence here. Wat Phanan Choeng features exquisite architecture with a giant golden buddha inside and many other statues. The holy beautiful place attracts many people both locals and foreigners for praying and sightseeing.
The temple complex is a bit far away from the main areas of the Historical City. Still, it is a deserving historical place for your visit. The main attractions of the temple are a reclining stone Buddha (which is similar to Wat Pho in Bangkok) and a very tall stupa that is open to the public. Tourists can follow the staircase going up and admire the panoramic view of the surrounding ruins of architecture from this viewpoint.
