Typical for the tropical climate, Hoi An enjoys a warm temperature throughout the year (29°C), but it still has two distinct seasons: the dry season (February to September) and the rainy season (October to January). The best time to visit the town is from February to May when the weather is mild with moderate temperature, less rain and low humidity. For beach and diving vacationers, June to August is the recommended period to soak up.
The best way to explore Hoi An is to simply walk around alleyways and side streets where you can admire its enchanting streetscape with a wide range of antique stores, art galleries, restaurants and bars side by side. If you are a history buff, the ancient architectural works of Hoi An such as Japanese Covered Bridge, Assembly Hall of Fujian, Tan Ky Ancient House, or Sa Huynh Culture Museum will be definitely worth a visit. This village is famous for more than 40 types of vegetables and herbs such as basil, lettuce, chive, perilla, and coriander that are used to spice up most of Hoi An local dishes in restaurants and eateries. Coming Tra Que village, you enjoy a lot of things to do including wandering around vegetable beds, seeing local people working on their farms, learning how to grow these greens or cycling along the village paths, etc. You could visit Tra Que village on your own but it is better if you book a tour for everything arranged with garden and market visits, being a farmer, cooking class and delicious local lunch.
Hoi An is a bike-friendly town with many beautiful streets surrounding the ancient houses and small paths along the islands. If you have more time in Hoi An, spend a day to cycle out of the city, you’ll see the green countryside of Hoi An with vast rice paddies, idyllic villages and pristine beaches. The first choice should be Cam Kim island where you can explore the local lifestyle, visit shipbuilding yards and small local markets. Another option is taking a leisurely cycle to An Bang or Cua Dai beach where you can soak in the cool seawater and enjoy a lazy day on a sunbed. For a more challenging trip, you could try a cycle across Cua Dai bridge or to My Son but consider your fitness beforehand and choose a suitable route.
When the sun sets, Hoi An becomes a magical place with hundreds of colourful lanterns from trendy bistros, bars, cafes, restaurants and live music venues. The best way to explore Hoi An at night is strolling around the vibrant streets and immersing in the lively atmosphere of the old town. If you’re interested in some nighttime shopping, come to Hoi An night markets where you can see a huge array of spices, souvenirs, lanterns and other handicraft products. If you happen to be in Hoi An on the 14th day of any lunar month, you’ll have a great chance to join in the full moon party all around the old town. All lights are lit and floating candles are released into the Thu Bon river creating a stunning view as in a romantic movie scene.
Cao Lau is a delicious dish that any visitor should try once when exploring this ancient town. The main ingredients of Cao Lau typically consist of rice noodles, sliced char siu-style pork, bean sprouts, green herbs and broth. What makes it different from other Vietnamese noodle dishes is that the rice noodles are soaked in a lye solution from the ash of local wood, giving them a characteristic colour and texture. Some of the raw noodles are used to top the dish after deep-fried until crispy.
Mi Quang or Quang-style noodle is a noodle dish coming from Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam. In Hoi An, it is one of the most popular food items and can be found in many restaurants. Mi Quang includes rice noodles (which is wide flat and dyed yellow by turmeric), an assortment of Vietnamese herbs and fresh vegetables, meat (pork, shrimp, or chicken), and broth (which is just enough to wet the noodles when serving). Last but not least, the additional toppings may be peanuts, toasted sesame rice crackers, quail eggs and fresh chilli.
Com ga is not originated from Hoi An but somehow the locals succeeded in making it their signature dish. The top quality rice is seasoned and cooked in a mixture of chicken stock, turmeric and pandan leaves on wood-fired clay ovens; while free-range chickens raised in countryside gardens after boiling will be hand-shredded, mingled with fried shallots, salt and pepper. A mouthwatering dish of com ga comes with a small bowl of soup, pickled papaya, dipping sauces, and chillies.
Banh Bao Banh Vac or white roses as called by English speakers is a famous appetiser in Hoi An which resembles white roses displayed on a plate. This signature dish actually includes two types of steamed rice dumplings. Banh vac has shrimp, garlic, lemongrass and spring onion; while Banh Bao is filled with minced pork and mushrooms. You can enjoy Banh Bao Banh Vac at almost local restaurants in the town but find the same taste because they are all supplied by a local family who keeps the secret recipe of the dish living at 533 Hai Ba Trung Street.
Banh mi, the nationally recognized food item, could be found at any corner around Vietnam but in Hoi An, you could sample Vietnam’s best banh mi. A typical banh mi Hoi An is loaded with fillings such as roasted pork belly, pate, pickled papaya, cilantro, chillies and hot peppers. If you prefer other meat fillings, you can try the boiled chicken, fried eggs, grilled pork, meatballs or boiled sausages.
