Famous for its location at the foot of Mandalay Hill on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, Mandalay is the 2nd largest city in Myanmar, after Yangon. The ancient name of Mandalay was Ratanapunja (meaning City of Gems) but was given the name 'Mandalay' based on the 236m high Mandalay Hill which is well-known as one of the most famous tourist destinations in this city. Founded in 1857 by King Mindon and was destroyed in WWII, until the 1990s, the city was reconstructed.
Tucked away at the foot of Mandalay Hill, the Kuthodaw Pagoda (also known as Maha Maha Lawka Marazein Paya) has an impressive size and is home to the world's largest book which is actually made up of around 729 standing stone "pages" with Buddhist teachings on them. To protect these stones through time and changes, each of them has a stone umbrella to cover.
Mahamuni Pagoda has long been one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites and the famous Buddhist relics in Myanmar. This pagoda is home to the most ancient Buddha image which was believed to be sculpted as the Buddha during the 4th Buddha's visit to Arakan. According to records of Buddhism, only five likeliness of the Buddha were made.
Situated near the 14th Street in Mandalay and was built entirely of teak wood in the mid 19th century by King Mindon, this more than 120-year-old Shwenandaw Monastery is truly a wood masterpiece of the art with 4 floors narrowing toward the top and attracts many travellers because of its historical value and ancient mystical beauty.
Mandalay Hill is on the list of top must-visit attractions when travelling to Mandalay not only because it is the holiest summit but also the incredible panoramic views from the top. It is recommended that you should visit early in the morning for sunrise of late afternoon for sunset, the weather is also cooler. There are two options to get to the top - you can either climb up the hill (1,729 steps) or take an elevator.
