Mongar is perched on a hill at an average of 1,600m altitude. This is known as the fastest-developing dzongkhag in the east of Bhutan.

Mongar is famous for its Lemon Grass which is used to produce an important oil of the kingdom.

On the western part of Mongar, it contains part of the Phrumsengla National Park, while the Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the northeastern part of its.

There is a great variety of Bhutanese dialects & languages in Mongar. This is also one of the oldest educational hubs in Bhutan.

Mongar district has a total area of 2,859 square kilometres (1,104 sq mi) with a total population of around 37,150 people in 2017.
