Situated in the Lower Mekong Basin, Tonle Sap (in the Khmer language, 'Sap' means 'Lake') which is well-known as one of the biggest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia joins with the nearly 120km long Tonle Sap River and all flows into the stunning Mekong River. Tonle Sap Lake has an important role with locals since more than three million people inhabit nearby or on the lake & mainly make their living from farming and fishing. Situated on the northern lake-edge, 50km away from Siem Reap, Kompong Khleang (also spelt Kampong Khleang) is one of the most remote and less touristy than some other floating villages like Chong Kneas or Mechrey. Its appeal lies in the fact that Kompong Khleang is both a floating and stilted village in accordance with the water level.
After a short drive of nearly 30km from Siem Reap, you will arrive Kompong Phluk village which looks like a stilted village instead of a floating one if you travel during the dry season. This village is the best place for an authentic close-up local experience of how people live and survive along the banks.
To travel to one of the most picturesque and peaceful floating fishing villages - Prek Toal, you will need to take a short boat tour of 2 hours from Chong Kneas village. Visiting this village and explore the daily life of locals to improve your knowledge about their culture and customs.
