Admire the biggest fortress in Bhutan - Trongsa Dzong
Built in 1644, Trongsa Dzong, "The Vanguard Of The Warriors" as well as the largest dzong in Bhutan, is not only an impressive architectural wonder but also plays an essential part in running the kingdom in the earlier time. This magnificent fortress-monastery is located in the eponymous district where is also the centre region of Bhutan. Situating atop of a steep ridge that overlooks the deep surrounding valleys, Trongsa Dzong can be easily seen from anywhere in the town due to the special location as well as its large-scale structure. The dzong was the seat of power of the Wangchuck Dynasty before they became rulers of Bhutan in 1907. Traditionally, the King of Bhutan first becomes the Trongsa Penlop (governor) before being named as the Prince and eventually the King. Controlling the east-west trade of the country for centuries, Trongsa Dzong now is also regared as a living museum by its great history and many valuable relics remained here. Here also contains a notable printing house that undertakes the responsibility of printing of many religious texts in Bhutan. Trongsa Tsechu, a five-day traditional festival, is celebrated in the northern courtyard of the dzong during December or January annually and attracts a lot of locals and foreigners to visit.
