Admire the Great Buddha of Kamakura
The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kamakura Daibutsu) is an enormous bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which sits in the grounds of Kotokuin Temple, in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Dating back as far as 1252, this statue is one of Japan’s most fascinating historical landmarks, and the venerable symbol of Kamakura. It is approximately 13.35 metres tall including the base and weighs approximately 121 tons, making it the second largest monumental Buddha in Japan (only after Todaiji's Great Buddha in Nara). The highlight of any visit is certainly exploring inside the Great Buddha itself. For a small donation, you can go inside the sacred statue, see how it was cast, and enjoy the emptiness within the muted world. You can also spend more time wandering around the temple area and unwinding in the pure and tranquil atmosphere there.
