Catch a glimpse into the past life of the idyllic Nagamachi Samurai District
An essential stop on your visit to Kanazawa, Japan, Nagamachi is a beautifully preserved historic district that was once the residential area for the samurai of the powerful Maeda clan, located southeast of Kanazawa Castle. Picturesque narrow lanes, small canals, tile-topped earthern walls, and remaining samurai residences in the district make for a gentle walk back in time to see the lifestyle of the samurai during the Edo period. One of the main attraction is Nomura-ke, a restored samurai residence of a high ranked samurai family with a lovely inner gardens, now turned into a museum. Inside you will find many artifacts of the era, family heirlooms, and elegant antiques that a samurai might own. There are also other museums and restored structures scattered throughout, along with many shops and restaurants, like Shinise Kinenkan Museum, a restored pharmacy of Edo Period merchants with plenty of local Kanazawa crafts.
