Discover Chittorgarh Fort
Being one of the UNESCO Heritage Site series of Six Hill Forts of Rajasthan, Chittor Fort (or Chittorgarh Fort), which is located in the epynomous township, is one of the largest forts in India. The fort was the capital of the Mewar region. It sprawls over a hill 180 m in height and spreads over an area of 2.8km2 above the plains on the left bank of the Berach river (a tributary of the Banas River) and is linked to the new town of Chittorgarh. Chittorgarh Fort is regarded as the symbol of Rajput chivalry, resistance and bravery. The fort precinct houses many historical palace that are all significant for their typical Rajput architectural features. Along with seven big gates and two prominent commemorative towers, there are also many temples within the fort. A great complex of Jain temples are the major attraction here. The fort once had 84 water bodies that are in the form of ponds, wells and step wells but only 22 of them have been retained now. These water bodies are fed by natural catchment and rainfall, and have a huge water source that could meet the needs of an army of 50,000. A huge site with so much to see, a stop should not be missed for history lovers, and also a great place to draw breath when in the south-central part of Rajasthan.
