Discover the majestic Jaisalmer fort
Standing out amidst the endless golden sands of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer Fort is the pride of Jaisalmer City and was built by Rao Jaisal, the Bhati Rajput ruler. The fort is 460m long, 230m wide and was built atop a hill that raises above a height of 76 m above the surrounding areas. Owning a 30-feet tall wall protects the magnificent 25-feet tall Jaisalmer Fort, it is regarded as one of the world’s largest forts. People in Rajasthan often call it a more common name of ‘Sone Ka Quila’ (the golden fort), which goes perfectly with its appearance. They are all made of light yellow sandstone, which gives the fort a beautiful golden feel and lavish beauty. Like layouts of many other forts in India, the fort itself is a building complex that contains loads of palaces, temples, wells, houses and havelis. Intricately decorated balconies, windows and arches are common features across havelis here. A rustic blend of Rajputana and Islamic architecture along with its dominant hilltop location, the gigantic Jaisalmer Fort is clearly visible from even far distances, which helps it look stunning anytime in a day, especially when the night falls and the entire complex is lightened.
