Discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Agra-the city - Agra Fort
Located to the southwest of the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort is a famous historical site in Agra which was mainly built in the 16th century under the reign of Akbar – one of the greatest Mughal Emperors. Not only a part of military defensive system, Agra Fort was also remained as the main residence of the Mughal Emperors until the year 1638 when the capital of Mughal Empire was moved from Agra to Delhi. Hence it can be also regarded as a magnificent palace complex which contains a lot of beautiful buildings and exquisite architectures inside. Surrounded by a double battlemented massive wall of red sandstone which makes it very impressive from the outside, the fort has 4 gates on each side, which now the entry is allowed through the Amar Singh Gate only. Agra Fort reflects great tapestry of both Hindu and Muslim arts and was used to be a very gorgeous fort-palace, but eventually it was uniquely served as Shah Jahan's prison, a kind of very lavish imprisoned place, until his death. Due to its significance of history and culture, the Agra Fort was recognized the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and has became one of the major attractions in Agra.
