Explore Wat Damnak – the largest pagoda in Siem Reap
Located downtown Siem Reap, Wat Damnak is not only the largest Buddhist pagoda in town but also a famous teaching monastery in the city. The place was formerly the royal residence of King Sisowath (1904–1927) before serving as the military base of the Khmers Rouges between 1975 and 1979. Nowadays, Wat Damnak becomes a center for study with a primary school and a Center for Khmer Studies which is open for the public to study, research documents and read books. While visiting around the traditional Khmer architecture, stone sculptures of Buddha, and water lilies pond, you’ll observe the daily life of the resident monks or even participate in a private good luck blessing ceremony. It’s surely a tranquil and serene experience you need in Siem Reap.
