Hanging coffins in Sagada
For the brave hearts who are seeking a death-themed experience in northern Philippines, the hanging coffins in Sagada is a famous attraction you should not miss out in your itinerary. Within the lush Echo Valley, you will find several hanging coffins, either tied or nailed to the sides of cliff faces high above the ground, those are the unique burial ritual of the Igorot tribe, an indigenous group living in the region. The tradition is claimed to have been practicing for over 2,000 years and Sagada people believe that placing the coffins on the side of a cliff, the deceased would be brought closer to heaven/their ancestral spirits. Visitors to the coffin site can view and observe these hanging coffins from a respectful distance and remember: do not touch or walk under the coffins.
