Relax at Kanniya Hot Springs
Kanniya Hot Springs is a popular tourist attraction in Trincomalee on the east coast of Sri Lanka. The site includes a series of seven wells in a square shape, each with a depth of about 3-4 feet. The temperature is considerably high and slightly different to one another. One can see the bottom of the wells and the water will run out after taking 10-15 buckets. The hot spring was formally recognised as protected monuments in 2011, along with Chaitya mound and other scattered building ruins in the grounds. While many considered that the wells were used by Buddhist monks of Velgam Vehera Buddhist Monastery for cleaning and purification, Kanniya Hot Spring site was believed to connect with the antagonist Ravana of the Hindu epic, Ramayana. It says that Ravana stuck the Earth with his sword in several spots which has later emerged into the hot springs, and the place was named after his mother, Kanniya.
