Soak into the natural scenery and outstanding onsen of Shuzenji
Located in the hilly center of Izu Peninsula, Shuzenji is one of the most famous hot spring resort towns with luxurious and traditional ryokan in Japan. Unlike many nearby onsen towns offering vast ocean views, Shuzenji lures large numbers of visitors to the town by its history and attractive natural setting. At the center of town, you will find Shuzenji Temple, founded about 1200 years ago by Kobo Daishi, one of Japan's most important religious features. Just a few minute walk is Hie Shrine with its two huge and sacred cedar trees on the grounds, famous for the blessing of children. The highlight of Shuzenji is apparently onsen bathing that visitors can experience at some ryokan, one of the best is Ryokan Asaba with more than three centuries of superb hospitality. You can also enjoy the public, open-air foot bath along the river bed that runs through the town center. Other places of interest in Shuzenji include a serene bamboo forest, some tastefully designed shops and cafes, and the romantic red bridges across Katsuura-gawa.
