Take a late afternoon cruise on the picturesque Periyar Lake
At the centre of the Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary locates the eponymous lake, an interesting freshwater lake that was artificially created when Kerala’s longest river, Periyar River, was dammed in 1895. The dam formed the present day Periyar Lake's coverage a total area of 26 square kilometres. The lake itself blends seamlessly into the landscape of the region and is a major part of the reserve’s eco system that harbors terrestrial, aquatic and subterranean life forms. Serving as a major source of water for the wildlife in the sanctuary, Periyar lake contributes to the conservation of plants, fowl, fish and wild animals, some of which are rare, endemic and also endangered. This reservoir is famous for its biodiversity, hence taking a boat ride is a favorite for any nature and wildlife enthusiasts as it offer the opportunity to spot various species residing here besides viewing the natural beauty and eye-catching scenery of the lake as well as the surrounding lush forests. A scenic boat ride on the lake will last for an hour and a half. A late afternoon cruise, when the coolness comes in the evening, are highly conducive to see many wild animals drink at the water edge.
