Uncover the tranquil nature of Matsumoto
Not only a center of history and cultural heritage, Matsumoto city in Nagano Prefecture offers visitors a number of day tours exploring its vast nature, including the exquisite valley of Kamikochi. This largely undeveloped resort spreading out 15 kilometers is home to some of Japan’s most spectacular mountain scenery with the splendid views of the surrounding Northern Japan Alps, like the Hotaka Mountain Range and the volcanic Mount Yakedake. The best way to enjoy the scenic region is by hiking the nature trails along the Azusa River or into the wild mountains. From the bus terminal in the center, take a short walk to the Kappabashi Bridge, a wooden suspension bridge spanning the Azusa River and a popular spot for snapping photos, you will start the day hike through the valley and its famous sightseeing spots, such as Taisho Pond, Myojin Pond, Tashiro Marsh, and Hotaka Shrine. A stop at Kamonjigoya tea house is recommended for a lunch with grilled freshwater fish and soba. Kamikochi trail requires no hiking experience and opens from late April until mid November (closed during winter)
