Visit Fatehpur Sikri - the former royal city
Despite being a short-lived capital city of the Mughal empire between 1572 and 1585, the splendid legacy of Fatehpur Sikri is a highlight during the trip in Agra for sure. This is a town about 40km away from the city of Agra to the west, which was a village before becoming the capital during the reign of Emperor Akbar. Akbar Emperor built the capital here to commemorate and pay the tribute to the Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chishti, who correctly predicted the birth of his heir to the Mughal throne. The former royal city houses a lot of magnificent architectures including the Imperial Palace Complex, a grand mosque, and the intricately marble tomb of the Sufi saint. The historic buildings in Fatehpur Sikri contain a great harmony of Islamic and Hindu elements in their style and design, which made them more stunning and exquisite. A visit to the abandoned capital will arouse the interest of yearning to learn more about the rich history of the Mughal Empire in its thriving age.
