Visit the historical and ancient Santhome Cathedral
Santhome Cathedral, also known as St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica and National Shrine of Saint Thomas, is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Chennai. It was built in the 16th century by Portuguese on the resting place of Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus then later rebuilt by the British in the 19th century, which formed its current architecture. Covered by an all-white facade, the church was designed in Neo-Gothic style that is favoured by British architects at that time, with big windows and naturally lit interiors. Santhome Cathedral is a stunning piece of architecture steeped in religious history as is one of the only three churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus, the other two are in Vatican City and Spain. It comes as no surprise that the place is a famous historical and significant pilgrim centre that is a must for any visitors to Chennai. For those who are seeking a place of peace and repose, Santhome Cathedral is also an inviting cultural and religious attraction.
