During Japan’s feudal times, the Nakasendo trail through the central mountains and Kiso Valley was one of the main ancient highways that connected Edo (present-day Tokyo) with Kyoto. Travelers would take several days to travel and trade between the cities while staying overnight in post town’s minshuku – guest houses – along the route. Today, many sections of Nakasendo original route have been well-preserved with nostalgic cobblestone paths and unpaved mountains trails, making it a perfect adventure for hikers and trekkers. On this interesting Japan tour, we will take you to the Kiso Valley for a three-day trip of walking along the ancient trail, including the most popular part between Magome and Tsumago, and the most dangerous path between Yabuhara and Narai. You will also have plenty of time to explore the charming post towns and enjoy a glimpse into the Japan of old.
